Words to self..
If I want to be Healthy...I need to cultivate some
Healthy Habits.
If I want to be Healthy...I need to cultivate some
Healthy Habits.
Have YOU ever wondered why bad habits so easily
attach themselves to us? But, they so difficult to get rid of?
Yet, good habits are just the opposite? It's hard work to
keep the good habits hanging around. =(
keep the good habits hanging around. =(
I read somewhere once that bad habits are like weeds in a garden.
If we don't pull them at all, they can take over the flowers. When we
do pull the weeds (bad habits), we need to replace the area with good
good habits (flowers). This will keep the weeds from coming back.
...pretty good visual...what do YOU think?
Many books, magazine articles and websites....when they
discuss creating habits, they seem to have several things in common:
(1) To make it a habit...needs at least a 30 days/daily commitment
(2) Start Simple...as you are successful...you can expect more of yourself
(3) Have a Buddy/Friend to help motivate you
(4) Write down... the specific goal and keep track of progress
(5) Make the activity fun in some way and reward successes
(6) Create the goal and pursue the habit... for long-term reasons
It's a NEW year!
We can reNEW our goals! We can become
reNEW-vinated (like rejuvinated...re-motivated?)
towards a healthier, NEW US!!

~~ Ruby's Report ~~
Treadmill - After reading some stuff about habits, I went back to my initial
goal/plan - the one when I started exercising on the treadmill last
year. The first priority back then (and now) - to create the habit
of "getting ON" the treadmill 6 days per week. It's not about
how fast or long...just about the habit of getting ON. Once I
establish this routine, I'll set another goal "on top" of the 6 days
per week. After the "getting on"...I can set a goal for a certain
amount of miles or for a certain length of time, etc.
~~This week, I'm happy to report, I DID 6 days straight this
week! You can check the pace and miles that I went by going to
my Daily Mile widget on the right sidebar...towards the bottom =)
Foods - I tried to drink more water at the beginning of the week, but, slacked off
towards the end. I'm thinking that I should do a "water chart" and post
somewhere in the kitchen. I mite do better if I keep track somehow.
Do you have a system to drink more water?
Weight - I'm down 1.4 lb this week!! WAhooo!

good read!
I had a similar week ... started good, but ended badly ;-)
thanks for the motivation ;-)
If you can just maintain - then in my book - you are not gaining - and that's a good thing :)

I'm beginning - (new beginning - new year) to walk again. I have a friend who keeps me accountable.
SMILES! One step at a time.

Your Saturday post is getting very fancy :) One healthy goal I have for this year and I want to make it a habit is to drink 1/2 a cup of water while I stand at the sink in the morning (where I fill up my cup) and then finish it before breakfast. I have read (and it makes sense) that we are slightly dehydrated after a nights sleep.
I love your weigh in button. I have put it on my sidebar. On Fri 6th Jan I was 76.5kg. On Fri 13th Jan I was 75.5 kg. My goal was to lose a kg and I did it. I think I averaged about 5300 kJ a day. You are right about just getting on the treadmill. That first step seems so hard but once you get on you wonder what all the fuss was about :)
I hate drinking water so I drink herbal tea and carbonated mineral water as well as plain water. You should be very pleased with yourself this week. Great effort.
I started running on the treadmill last week. I hope to continue all year, and hopefully lose some pounds in the process. I'd love to lose 40 pounds.
I put your button on my sidebar: http://justhavetotellyou.blogspot.com/
Very inspiring post, thankyou....I think I might follow some of your goals...
LOVE your post regarding getting rid of old habits as "weeds" and new habits as "flowers". I copied and pasted on my weigh-in journal!
I signed up on Saturday for the Choose to Lose program at our local YMCA. My goal is to lose 15 pounds in 10 weeks.
Thanks for the chance to win your giveaway.
I put the button on my right side bar. Check it out!

My goal for this year is to get my health in order. I have been having some health issues, and have finally made the doctors appointments to get them in order. My next appointment is tomorrow when I go for a sleep study. (yay..).. then again in February back to the Rheumatologist. Finally some answers instead of sitting in pain. Smart huh. Then I can begin to move again :)
I put your button on my blog. http://runtomomma.blogspot.com/
My biggest goal is to eat 5 servings of veggies/day. THe only reason I don't do it is because I get lazy re: cooking and keeping some veggies at hand in the frig.
I started back at weight watchers and my goal is to be back at goal.
I put your cute button on my sidebar
Hi - I came to your blog via Sarah Craig. This is a cool site. I guess my goal would be to move more. Sounds simple, but chemotherapy did a number on my heart, so it takes a lot of energy some days for me to get from Point A to Point B. I don't blog (except on Caring Bridge), but I'd grab your button if I did!
For the water, I like to get a pitcher and pour my entire measured amount for the day in there. I like room temp water, so I just leave it out on the counter. I know that I do like to sleep at night and not have to be up visiting the girlies room, so that is motivation to get my water finished before 8 or so.
My first goal is to take charge of taking care of myself. Somehow, I have allowed myself to lose that. Everyone else seems to be controlling my destiny. Reminding myself daily that I can choose to be healthier and fitter is a good start. Get the ol' brain working with me.
Hi, Annie. Good post about habits and health. It's always good to have a reminder. Since the end of December I've been doing a morning yoga routine (20 minutes) after seriously pulling a muscle in my back, which incapacitated me for several weeks. Wake up call. If I ever feel like slacking off, I remember the excruciating pain. Weather permitting, I also work a couple hours per day in the garden--medium workout. I've tried to curb comfort eating by doing more creative work at the sewing machine. Thanks for your thoughts.
best, nadia
What a fun post...the visual analogy was awesome!
My goal is to come back from an angry ankle. I haven't been able to jog since before Christmas, when the ankle I angered by falling (didn't sprain, just anger the tendons and bruise the bone) back at the end of October got worse. So I'm trying to come back from that.
Oh, and for drinking more water, try looking into one of the reusable water glasses (mine has a screw-on lid and a straw) to make it travel-friendly but still easy to get into. I drink at least twice as much water when it's easier for me to drink. Lazy? Yes. But it works!
My goal is to get off my hormone replacement meds. I have been gradually stepping off them. About three more weeks and I am hoping it's a done deal. I am cutting back on pop and artificial sweeteners too.
After neck problems it was hard to get started exercising again. I am slowly getting back into it. There is so little time in a day when you work full time that it does take a commitment to exercise.
I put your button on my blog.

Great start! My healthy goal is to do yoga then my treadmill three days on, one day off. And eat healthy snacks (carrots) in the evening if I just have to munch! Good luck!
I belong to "Curves" and my goal is to workout 4 times a week and drink more water. I'm going for a weigh-in tomorrow. Hopefully, that will give me some inspiration
Obviously the rest of blogdom knows how to add a button to their sidebar without using html code. Unfortunately, this fat old lady does not. I would love to add your button. Could you help me figure out how to do it please?
I plan to join the local Y and use the therapy pool for exercise at least twice a week. I also want to use my indoor bike 6 days a week. So far, not doing too good on that one. Thanks for the giveaway!
I have added the button on my website sidebar here. http://michjeff-quiltersparadise.blogspot.com/
Thanks for your patience. I added the button to my sidebar.
I PLAN TO EAT HEALTHIER FOODS AND LESS SNACKING! ALSO EXERCISE MORE!
THANKS FOR SHARING!
I have lost a couple of Kilos by eating smaller portions and exercising.
Oh a good post, thanks for the visuals and the reminder about how long it does take to re-establish good habits.
I don't have a problem with water consumption but I do know that for other things keeping a chart or writing it down where I will readily see it (for me it's the fitness tracker and WW app on my iPhone) helps a lot. I'm always checking in on my apps. lol
That said, I am slowly restocking my kitchen with healthier and better choices. Kids will have to adjust and hubs is in the healthier lifestyle lane with me now. That makes a tremendous difference.
Sleep. Do you sleep enough? At the right times for your body? Not me, but it is time I do. In fact, I think I'll go to bed right after I find that button.
I'm trying to clear my brain by getting enough sleep. I'm 2 days in.
I linked it here

I love this idea and seeing some of my other bloggy friends jump in, I am in the water too. I need to set regular meal times - living alone, I tend to eat one meal a day. I am a big fruit and vegie eater, but think I need to watch starches - may look into the Gluton free because of my grandsons' food alergies - maybe NaNa needs to adjust that area too. And more water for sure - cut back on the coffee.
I put the button on my sidebar and I think I will do up a highlight on Thursday's post.
The easiest way to get myself to drink more water was to buy a huge bottle of water (50 oz) and then keep it by my side at all times. As soon as it runs out, I refill it, so I always have water by my side. If 50 oz seems too intimidating (or heavy), a smaller bottle would work. You can just keep track of how many times you go through it. Maybe you're already doing something similar, but that's what helps me the most.
Good luck to you!!! I love your idea of focusing on getting ON the treadmill every day before you focus on the exercise itself. Great idea!
This was a great post, very encouraging and inspiring. I have a goal for now which is simple. More water, less sugar. I have a goal for when it warms up. Walk the mile around my block. That doesn't sound like much until you realize that it's about a 60 degree angle down hill one way, and what goes down must come back up the other way! I walked off 30 pounds two years ago, and I have a goal to walk off another 20 this year.
I just found out that my mother is getting remarried in July, and that I am walking her down the isle (with my brother). Eek! I don't fit into any of my cute dresses. I'm gonna have to get off my b*m and get MOVING!
My goal this year was to get in more exercise, and floss every day! I had recently hear that not flossing can lead to heart disease! Yikes! So, I've flossed every day but 3 so far, which is more than I flossed ALL last year! Yay!
The exercise, not so much.....but I am loving your idea of 'just get on the treadmill' at least 6 times a week. I can do that! And I'll work on for how long later! Thanks!
