According to an article on WebMED , there's some real
evidence to prove this theory.
So...maybe if I sleep like HER for many days, nights...for weeks,
when I wake up I can look like this? Nope? well, shoot =(
Sleep debt is like credit card debt,” Susan Zafarlotfi, PhD says.
“If you keep accumulating credit card debt, you will pay high
interest rates or your account will be shut down until you pay it
all off. If you accumulate too much sleep debt, your body will crash.”
“It’s not so much that if you sleep, you will lose weight, but if you
are sleep-deprived, meaning that you are not getting enough minutes
of sleep or good quality sleep, your metabolism will not function
properly,” explains Michael Breus, PhD, author of Beauty Sleep
and the clinical director of the sleep division for Arrowhead
Health in Glendale, Ariz.
Exactly how lack of sleep affects our ability to lose weight?
Dr. Breus explains...
The two hormones that are key in this process are ghrelin and leptin.
“Ghrelin is the ‘go’ hormone that tells you when to eat, and when you are
sleep-deprived, you have more ghrelin,” Breus says. “Leptin is the
hormone that tells you to stop eating, and when you are sleep deprived,
you have less leptin.”
More ghrelin plus less leptin equals weight gain.
“You are eating more, plus
your metabolism is slower when you are sleep-deprived,” Breus says.

I have to admit that when I don't sleep well...I do eat more
and it seems like it's a vicious cycle for me. I eat bad
stuff and then I'm even more tired.
Do YOU feel like you get enough sleep? What do you do to help
you get your need for sleep fulfilled? Have you noticed any difference
in weight loss and sleeping better...getting enough rest?

Don't. Give. Up. (And never discount the effect of hormones on your weight!)
I did great all week until the hubs wanted KFC last night..... ugh! Oh, and the double stuff oreos I had before bed..... Yeah - new week, new beginning. So glad my babies will be going back to school on Monday - I NEED to hit the gym - it's been 2 weeks of kids at home, hence 2 weeks of NO workouts! I'm so stir crazy......
Get back on that horse! You can do it!
I haven't gotten a scale yet - simply that I think the continual
weighing can hamper. Remember muscle weighs more , so as you platue or maybe a small gain, could actually be an accumed muscle tone. I know I am down a size, feel better, and can acheive a little more with each small exercise. And today I stayed the distance with my grandsons without collapsing for a nap afer they left!
For the pooch, yeah, it helps with wrinkles! LOL. I try to sleep a lot. Now that I'm retired, I do it on my own schedule, and if I have to get up too early too many days in a row, I plan a day where the phone and everything else is off, and I sleep until my body wakes up and says enough!

So enjoying your added blog focus on 'weighty' issues - a subject that has been a lifelong dilemma for me! Keep up the good work.
Sleep -for me the link between sleep and weight is that when I am tired or sleep deprived, my capacity to make and stick to good choices is severely compromised!
Cheers, kathy
I have a hard time sleeping too - and it's true, when I'm tired I do eat more (and bad stuff!) to try and get more energy. I have a frozen banana smoothie every morning - with some chocolate whey protein powder and soy milk - it's like having a chocolate shake every morning - yum!
I put in 5 1/2 hours of gardening yesterday. Hope it will help in my weight loss campaign.
words of wisdom? If you have a sweet breakfast, you will want to eat sweet all day. (Also, make sure to have protein with any charbs you consume... that is right out of the mouth of a dietician. It keeps your charbs from spiking and tiring out your liver and pancrease. It'll keep your blood sugar on an even keel and keep you from being diabetic.)
Hugs!
Good post and I find I can't lose weight if I don't have enough sleep. What did I learn this week - that's there's too many family birthdays in March = too many cakes?!
Good post... and I had to smile over the wee dog! I have wrinkles too... hmmmm...
Hi Annie, Thought I better clock in. I think I get plenty of sleep and I try to get ready for bed by drinking my cup of chamomile tea. I think it really helps me relax.I went for my annual check up and my doctor says I just have to get real and lose some weight sooner than later. I tend to respond well to authority figures so she is writing up a care plan that includes visits to the nutritionist and keeping a food diary. I think she is just mean enough and serious enough to make me avoid those sugary foods I crave. We will see :) Glad to see you are still working at the exercise and food choices.
I think it is a vicious cycle for me too. I know for sure I eat more when I am tired. I have been much better about sleeping for the last 6 months. Sleep is now a top priority for me...it comes before sewing and blogging. That is sometimes frustrating that I can't stay up half the night like when I was young, but I see the value in sleep now :)
