ground beef
or??
or ground turkey
I was surprised when I read the following information in one of last year's Weight Watcher Magazines:
"A 4 ounce burger made with ground turkey can have up to 17 g fat. That's 13g more than a burger made with 94% lean ground beef."..."Ground turkey can contain dark meat and skin" For leaner ground turkey make sure that it is breast meat which have only 1g per 4oz."
I really like the taste of the beef hamburgers. I usually try to buy the 94% lean ground beef. But, when making casseroles, I've just bought the package that says "lean ground turkey" and mixed with ground beef. I thought that I was making the recipe leaner. Next time, I buy ground turkey to lower fat content, I'll look for the white meat. =)
What do you use for hamburgers or ground meat casseroles?

Salisbury Steak
(yields 6 servings under 200 calories each)
Ingredients:
To prepare:
Combine first 4 ingredients. Divide meat mixture into 6 equal portions, shaping each into a 1/2-inch-thick patty. Heat a large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium-high heat. Add patties; cook 6 minutes or until browned, turning after 3 minutes. Remove patties from pan; keep warm. Stir in water and remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil; add patties. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes. Uncover and cook until wine mixture is reduced to 3/4 cup (about 10 minutes).

Ruby's Report
Activity - 2 miles 3 days...but, other days a little over 1 mile. I kinda slacked this past week. =(
Hope I do better next week.
Hope I do better next week.
Food - I'm still working to stay away from "bad" carbs (sugar and other white stuff) It seems to be getting easier as time passes. Fruits and veggies are looking and tasting better too. It's still hard to not "cheat" when out to eat. If, I eat a bit of protein, like 5-10 almonds and drinks some water...that seems to lower temptations towards bad carbs. I just do SO much better when we don't go out to eat.
Weight (loss?) - down .8 (feel a bit discouraged that it's not coming off faster).

I need to read this several (hundred) times!
How are you all doing...with foods?....activities?
You encourage me...

I like beef better too!!
I always use lean beef because I like the taste better and DH would turn up his nose at ground turkey. I never thought ground turkey could have more fat than lean beef. Good to know.
I have never used turkey - does it really taste as good? And you don't look in your picture like you have an ounce of weight to lose Annie. And let's see - I am getting ready to go to a party with 30 of Andy's friends for his 12th birthday - wish me luck. sandie
I personally grind my own beef. I buy bottom of the round, which is pretty lean more importantly, I know exactly what is in my ground beef, and it is just lean meat! It is quite an episode of grinding so I do probably 10-12 pounds at a time. I freeze it in quart freezer bags, pressed flat and then the bags can be stacked and it thaws quickly. A tip that I use for casseroles. If you want to cut back on the fat, you can easily cut 25% of it by cutting 25% of the beef. If a recipe calls for a pound, I use 3/4 of a pound. I find that we don't really notice a difference, but then there is only 2-3 of us.
We eat grass-only-fed beef, that we raise on our farm. I love turkey, but not ground.
We use lean beef for burgers. But I've used ground turkey breast in chili and no one knew the difference. ;-)
I am not a huge fan of turkey to begin with, but a burger is beef to me - maybe that's the farmgirl in me. I eat very little meat of late - it's meatless or fish.
I can really sympathize with your disappointment that the pounds aren't dropping as fast as you would like them to. I only dropped one pound this week, but I keep telling myself that it is one pound closer to my goal.
I have been on the Curves Complete program for 9 weeks and have lost 15 pounds. I feel like it should be more, but I'm grateful for every little bit.
I am a mess right now. My cardiac rehab has been suspended because Ron has been very sick and I miss the good exercising. Now I'm ready to go back but my therapist is gone for Spring Break so I will try to do better on my own. We are trying to eat a lot of fish.
Can I say that I read the Napoleon Hill quote as:
"One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of QUILTING when one is overtaken by temporary defeat!"
Think this might just become my new mantra!!
Don't you hate misleading food labels? UGH.
Don't get discouraged! Losing weight is a HUGE battle and taking any steps toward being healthier and happier are an enormous accomplishment! I've been there, though. Feeling like you're working so hard for little results. No fun. Hang in there, though! Sounds like you're doing well with eating better and it'll get easier the longer you do it :)
It's all so confusing, isn't it?? It seems that you can find convincing arguments for just about everything these days! One day it's good for you, the next it isn't. I guess it's all about finding the right personal balance.
I stopped eating all meat about a year ago so I don't have to worry about this choice but there are plenty of others I grapple with :)!
Keep up the good work. You should still feel great about dropping 0.8 - every little bit counts.
Take care and enjoy your week! Hugs!
Everybody needs a little fat content in their life. =) If I don't want it, I use TVP. There are a lot of delicious tasting ones out there, but I usually buy it from Shelf Reliance. I like taco a lot and most people can't tell the difference. I REALLY hate turkey anything, no matter what color it is!
